2012 Kelly Cup Playoffs

Round 2 Florida vs. Elmira

Game 1 April 13, 1012 - One number is all you need to know about this game.  45 Yes, you read it right, 45 is the number of saves tonight's #1 star Brian Stewart had as he led the Jackals to a 3-1 win and a 1-0 series lead over the Florida Everblades.  Mike Radja gave Elmira the early 1-0 lead as he scored the Jackals first power play goal of the post season on assists from Larocque and Dineen at 5:19 of the first.  Jean Bourbeau scored at 6:54 to make it 2-0 with a helper from Jimmy Martin.  The Everblades would make it 2-1 on a Brandon MacLean goal at 14:45.  In the second period, Elmira would make it 3-1 on a goal from Artem Demkov that was originally waved off by the referee but after consulting the goal judge the ref ruled it was a legitimate goal.  Demkov tally came at the 5:38 mark with assists from Gazley and Radja.  That would round out the scoring.  The story of this game was the outstanding goaltending of Brian Stewart.  Florida out shot Elmira 13-8 in the first, 17-7 in the second and 16-4 in the third for a game total of 46-19.  Stewart made save after spectacular save on route to the game one Victory.  Heading into game two the Jackals have to find a way to play their game and put more extended pressure in the offensive zone and take some heat off Stewart.  Come on out to the arena tomorrow night and support our hometown Jackals!!!

March 31,2012 - The Jackals loose 4-3 in a shootout to Wheeling but clinch the Regular season Eastern Conference Championship as Gwinnett lost to Florida!  Elmira will face the Reading Royals in the first round of the playoffs.  Games 1 and 2 will be in Reading on Tuesday and Wednesday with game 3 (4&5 if necessary) in Elmira on Friday Saturday and Monday.

March 30, 2012 - The Jackals come from behind again in the last regular season home game to beat the Reading Royals 3-2 in overtime.  League leading scorer and recently anointed first team all star Dustin Gazley had a three point night with an assist on Mike Radja's goal and the tying goal in the third period and game winning goal in overtime.  Brian Stewart earned the win in goal for Elmira.  The Jackals win coupled with the Gwinnette loss to Florida puts Elmira alone atop the Eastern Conference by one point heading into the season final in Wheeling tomorrow night.

March 23, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals defeated the Toledo Walleye 3-1.

March 18, 2012 - The Jackals defeated the Wheeling Nailers 3-2 in a shootout.  The Jackals win combined with the Chicago loss today clinches a spot in the playoffs for Elmira.  Mike Radja scored both of Elmira's regulation goals and Brian Stewart earned the win between the pipes.  With the Jackals earning the extra point in today's game, they increase the lead of Wheeling to six points.  Dustin Gazley assisted on Radja's first goal and he is now the overall scoring leader by 1 point.  The Jackals hit the road to face the Toledo Walleye next weekend.

March 17, 2012 - Same score, different result!  Tonight the Jackals turned the tables on the Florida Everblades by beating them by the same 3-2 score as last nights game.  The two teams fought to a scoreless tie after two periods but Mike Radja broke the ice just one minute thirty seconds into the third period to put Elmira up 1-0.  Dustin Gazley put the Jackals up 2-0 just one minute sixteen seconds later.  Gazley is now in a three way tie for the league lead in scoring at 76 points.  Cedric Lalonde-McNicoll would get Florida on the board and make it 2-1 at 9:38 of the period.  At 12:52 Corey Tamblyn, fresh out of Clarkson and playing in his second pro game, scored what proved to be the game winning goal on assists from Gazley and Demkov.  Florida would pull their goalie with over two minutes to go and the extra attacker would pay off as they narrowed the margin to 3-2 on a David Fisher goal at 18:50.  Timo Pielmeier earned the victory in net with an outstanding performance including a key moment in the second period which saw Captain Mario Larocque whistled for a 5:00 min elbowing call and a game misconduct.  Elmira was able to kill off the Blades PP to escape the period knotted at 0-0.  For the season, the Jackals took the 6 game series 4 games to 2 and may face Florida in the first round of the playoffs.  Stay tuned on that one.  Wheeling comes to town tomorrow to round out the weekend slate.  Wheeling lost in OT tonight to Reading so the Jackals point lead in the division is now 5 points.  Come on out and cheer on the Jackals as they try to extend the lead to 7 tomorrow afternoon at First Arena.  See you all there!

Above: Corey Tamblyn (out of frame) buries the game winning goal into a wide open net to put the Jackals up 3-1.  Assisting on Tambly's first career pro goal were Dustin Gazley and Artem Demkon.  Elmira would hold on for the 3-2 win.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

March 16, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals faced off against the Florida Everblades.  If the playoffs started today these two teams would play one another in the opening round so each team wanted to make a statement in this contest.  It was a tight battle with the clubs knotted 1-1 heading into the third period.  Mike Radja would put Elmira up 2-1 with a goal at the 7:50 mark of the third with assists from Dustin Gazley and Benjamin Dleude-Fauvel.  Radja's tally was not enough as Florida scored 2 unanswered goals to take the 3-2 win.  The two teams meet again tomorrow night at First Arena.  Wheeling lost tonight to Reading 2-1 so the Jackals retain their four point lead over the Nailers.

Above: Mike Radja's shot finds it way through the maze of Everblades legs and into the net to put Elmira up 2-1 in the third period.  Unfortunatly the Jackals could not build on the lead and lost by a final of 3-2.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

March 10, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals hosted the Toledo Walleye at First Arena and won the game 5-1.  The win set a new team record for home wins in a season since joining the ECHL.  Kyle Reeds opened the scoring for Elmira when he scored at 6:06 of the first period.  Toledo would tie it 1-1 with a goal from Kris Belan.  Rob Bellamy would score what proved to be the game winner at 9:24 of the first.  Also scoring for Elmira were Louie Caporusso, Mike Radja and Jean Borbeau.  Brian Stewart earned the win in net for the Jackals.

Above: Rob Bellamy and Jordan Pietrus celebrate Bellamy's first period goal to make it 2-1.  Bellamy's goal would prove to be the game winning goal.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

March 9, 2012 - The Jackals defeated the Trenton Titans 7-3 tonight in Trenton.  Jordan Pietrus opened the scoring for Elmira when he scored on the PP at 8:15 of the first.  Seconds later Jean Borbeau made it 2-0 with an assist from Rob Bellamy.  Steve Silva cut the Jackals lead to 2-1 when he scored at the 19:28 mark of the first.  Craig Rivet made it 3-1 with a second period goal at the 9:14 mark.   Louie Caporusso made his return to the ice after being sidelined 6 weeks due to injury and scored 2 goals for Elmira.  Also scoring twice in the contest for Elmira was Mike Radja.  Mario Larocque had 4 assists on the night.  Timo Pielmeier earned the win between the pipes for Elmira.

March 4, 2012 - Brian Stewart earned the first shutout of the year for the Jackals and the offense got goals from Rob Bellamy, Corey Cowick and Benjamin Dleude-Fauvel as the Jackals outshot the Royals 31-14. With the win the Jackals extended their point total to 76 points.  The Jackals have two games this week as they visit Trenton Friday and are home Saturday to face the Toledo Walleye.  I'll see everyone Saturday night at First Arena!

March 3, 2012 - Mike Radja returned from the AHL and proceeded to score a Hat Trick and he added an assist for a four point night!  Dustin Gazley also scored for Elmira as the Jackals beat the Royals 4-1.  This was Elmira's final visit to Reading this year and they finished with a 6-1 mark on Sovereign center ice.  Brian Stewart earned the win in goal for Elmria and at press time, the Nailers are loosing to Cincy 7-5 in the third.  If the Cyclones hold on for the win it will extend the Jackals lead to 4 points over Wheeling.  The Royals return to Elmira tomorrow for the rubber match of the three game weekend series between the two clubs.  Come on out and cheer on our first place Jackals!

March 2, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals attack was relentless vs. the Reading Royals on home ice but they could only muster one puck past the red hot goalie Mark Owuya, recently sent down from the Toronto Marlies.  The Jackals peppered Owuay with 48 shots but John Kurtz netted the only Jackals goal at 16:50 of the second period to make it 2-1 Reading.  The Royals rounded out the scoring with an empty netter from Mikael Bedard, his second tally of the contest.  Tonight the Jackals look to turn the tables as they face off against the Royals in Reading in the second of three consecutive games against the division foes.

February 25, 2012 - The Jackals fought from behind to take a third period 3-2 lead but Trenton came back this time and won the contest 4-3.

February 24, 2012 - Another game, another come from behind win for the Elmira Jackals.  You have to know the Jackals don't plan it this way nor do they prefer to start out games this way but they do not let falling behind in a game phase them.  Reading took a 2-0 first period lead having scored those two goals on just 4 shots on goal.  Scoring for Reading were Dennis McCauley and Dale Mitchell.  In the second frame, Artem Demkov scored his 15th of the year as he buried a rebound with assists from Jean Bourbeau and Dustin Gazley to cut the lead to 2-1.  The third period began with the Jackals  on the power play and Mario Larocque fired a shot from the point to tie the game 2-2 just 34 seconds into the period.  Assisting on Larocque's goal were Dustin Gazley and Artem Demkov.  At the 7:28 mark, Craig Rivet scored his third of the season and first on home ice to give the Jackals the lead 3-2.  Rob Bellamy and Jordan Pietrus assisted on Rivit's game winner.  The Nailers also won tonight so the Jackals retain the 3 point division lead.

Above: Jordan Pietrus, Matt Campanale, Rob Bellamy, John Kurtz and Craig Rivit celebrate what proved to be Rivit's game winning goal in the third period.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

February 22, 2012 - If you missed this game, shame on you!  The Jackals won a thriller 5-3 over the Greenville Road Warriors tonight at First Arena.  After trailing 2-0 and being outshot 14-6 following the first period, the Jackals came out in the second period and carried the play while outshooting Greenville 21-4 and narrowed the gap to 2-1 when Rob Bellamy scored on a nice feed from Wacey Hamilton.  Jordan Pietrus also assisted on the goal.  In the third period, John Kurtz stole the puck from a Greenville defender and buried a shot to tie the game at 2-2 at the 2:21 mark.  Jyri Niemi netted his second goal of the game to give Greenville a 3-2 lead at 10:41.  Just over 3 minutes later Rob Bellamy scored his second of the game to tie it again at 3-3 on a feed from Jean Bourbeau who by the way saw his first action after being sidelined several weeks due to injury.  Welcome back Jean!  An awesome second effort goal where Bellamy collected his own rebound and buried it past Jason Missiaen.  Late in the period Bretton Cameron of Greenville went to the sin bin after high sticking Jackals Captain Mario Larocque putting Elmira on the PP.  Jordan Pietrus scored the game winner on the power play with assists going to Jack Downing on loan from Bingamton and Mario Larocque at 18:34.  Jean Bourbeau then scored an empty netter from center ice to seal the deal for the good guys from Elmira.

February 20, 2012 - STOP THE PRESS!!!  Today in Reading the Jackals were trailing the Royals 3-1 with under 5 minutes to go in the third period when Dustin Gazley scored at 15:33 from Larocque and Pietrus to cut the lead to 3-2.  Then with under a minute to go Pietrus scored at the 19:07 mark to tie it 3-3 and force overtime.  Neither team would score in OT so the game would be decided by a shootout.  After the scheduled 5 rounds of the shootout neither team could score so it went into sudden death rounds.  Finally, in the eighth round Kyle Reeds scored for Elmira to give them the advantage and Reading sent out Casey Haines to tie it but he was denied by Timo Pielmeier to give the Jackals the improbable win.  I'm telling you fans, this team never, ever gives up!  The win puts Elmira back on top in the division with 64 points.  The Jackals return home Wednesday night to face the Greenville Road Warriors.  Let's come on out and cheer the Jackals on as they continue to fight for points.

February 18, 2012 - The Jackals took a pounding on home ice by the Trenton Titans 8-1.  Wheeling also lost so the Jackals did not loose any ground in the standings.

Above: Brad Phillips makes one of his 25 saves for the Titans on root to the 8-1 rout of Elmira.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

February 17, 2012 - The Jackals faced off against the Wheeling Nailers at the War Memorial in Johnstown tonight and the Nailers came away with a 4-2 win to leap frog the Jackals into first place. The turning point came in the second period with the Jackals trailing 2-1 when an apparent goal by Demkov was disallowed on a high sticking call.  Check the photo below and you be the judge.  Did Artem play it with a high stick or was this a legal play?

Above: The shot from the point is just about to contact the stick of Artem Demkov who tipped the shot between the goalies legs for the score.  But wait...the referee ruled Demkov played the puck with a high stick and disallowed the goal.  What's your opinion?  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game.

February 16, 2012 - The Jackals went into Cincinnati and earned a 3-1 win over the Cyclones.  Artem Demkov tied the game 1-1 less than a minute after Cincy took the lead.  Nick Schaus netted the game winner at 17:22 of the third followed by an insurance empty net goal from Dustin Gazley at the 19:00 mark.

February 14, 2012 - The Jackals hosted a Wedding on Ice and the Wheeling Nailers.  The Jackals held a 2-1 lead late in the third but the Nailers tied the game with 7 seconds remaining in the period with the extra attacker on the ice to force overtime.  In overtime, Dustin Gazley scored the winning goal to give Elmira the extra point.

Above: Dustin Gazley scores the winning goal in OT to give Elmira the 3-2 win.  Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game

February 12, 2012 - This afternoon the Jackals lost to the Trenton Titans 4-2.

February 11, 2012 - Yannick Tifu put Reading up 2-0 early in the second period but it was not enough as Elmira scored 3 unanswered goals from Chase Watson, Jordan Pietrus and Artem Demkov to secure the win.

February 10, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals lost 3-2 in OT to the Reading Royals.  Yannick Tifu scored the winning goal with 1 second remaining in the 5 minute overtime session.

February 4, 2012 - The most anticipated game on the schedule against the Chicago Express has finally arrived.  In a game dubbed my many as Jackals East vs. Jackals West, former coach Steve Martinson brought 9 former Jackals into First Arena to face our beloved 11-12 Jackals team.  In a tight contest, the Express prevailed 2-1.  With the Jackals loss and Wheelings win, the Nailers are now tied with Elmira for first place in the division.

Above: Dustin Gazley scores the only goal for Elmira on a penalty shot in the third period to cut the Chicago lead to 2-1.  Elmira kept the pressure up throughout the third but could not notch the equalizer. Click here or on the photo above to view more photos from this game.

February 3, 2012 - The Jackals came back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game and force overtime to earn a point but lost in a shootout 4-3 to the Wheeling Nailers.  The Nailers are now only 2 points behind the Jackals in the race for the division title.

February 1, 2012 - The Jackals returned home to face the Wheeling Nailers and were handed a loss on home ice by a final of 4-1.  Rob Bellamy scored the only goal for Elmira as he took the puck from his own blueline, rushed up ice and split the defense to score the only goal against Wheeling net minder Peter Delmas.  With the win, the Nailers climb to within 3 points of first place Elmira.

January 21, 2012 - Tonight the Jackals faced off against second place Wheeling Nailers at the War Memorial in Johnstown, PA.  The Nailers rushed out to an early 2-0 1st period lead and things did not look too promising for Elmira. Nick Schaus cut the lead to 2-1 when he scored his first goal as a Jackal on a feed from Dustin Gazley.  Jordan Pietrus knotted the score at 2-2 with his 6th of the season with an assist from Craig Rivit.  Paul Crowder put Wheeling up 3-2 when he tucked the puck into an open net after a mad scramble around the Jackals net.  Roughly 3 minutes after Crowder's goal, Maxiem Gratchev scored his first of the night to tie the game 3 all after two periods.  The Jackals were on the power play to begin the third and 22 seconds into the frame Louie Caporusso scored his 12th of the season to put Elmira up 4-3.  Schaus and Brittian assisted on Caporusso's goal.  Brittian would score the eventual game winner at the 4:14 mark with an assist from Dustin Gazley.  Maxiem Gratchev would put home his second of the game at 5:37 as he carried the puck out of the corner and powered his way to the net and buried a backhand shot past Wheeling net minder Peter Delmas.  Artem Demkov assisted on Gratchev's second goal.  Barton would tack on an inconsequential goal at 17:43 to cut the lead to 6-4 but Jordan Pietrus would score his second of the game, an empty netter, at 19:16 with assists from Gazley and Harvey.  Timo Pielmeier made 34 saves on 38 shots faced to earn the win in goal for Elmira.  The win extends the Jackals point lead over Wheeling to 8 points.

January 20, 2012 - The Jackals looked like they were headed to overtime with the score knotted at 3-3 with time winding down in the third period.  Kevin Harvey brought the puck into the offensive zone and dished a nice saucer pass to a streaking Dustin Gazley who beat Trenton goalie Brad Phillips on the backhand to give Elmira a 4-3 lead with only 21 seconds remaining in the game.  Brian Stewart was outstanding in the game as he made 29 saves on 32 shots.  Tomorrow the Jackals face Wheeling in Johnstown, PA.

January 8, 2012 - The Jackals extended the current winning streak to 9 games with a hard fought 4-3 shootout victory over the Cincinnati Cyclones.  If you missed this game you missed an exciting finish.  The Jackals held a 3-1 third period lead but the Cyclones put on a huge push and were able to tie the game and send it to overtime.  In the 5 minute overtime period the Jackals had to kill a penalty to extend the game to a shootout.  Cincinnati held a 2-0 shootout advantage after their first two shooters scored on Brian Stewart.  However, the next 4 Jackals shooters scored to give Elmira the 4-3 shootout win.  You had to be here to believe this one.  The Jackals face Reading Friday night in Reading and return home Saturday and Sunday to face South Carolina and Trenton.

January 6, 2012 - The Jackals came from behind again in the third period to take a 3-2 regulation win over the South Carolina Stingrays.  The Stingrays took a 1-0 lead into the third but Dustin Gazley tied it at 4:05 and then Mario Larocque put Elmira up 2-1 on a blistering shot from the blue line that beat former Jackal goalie Daren Machesney.  South Carolina would tie it up at 2-2 on a goal from Pierre-Luc O'Brien.  With 2:19 left in the game, Louie Caporusso netted the game winner with a nifty wrap around play.  Timo Pielmeier was stellar in goal for Elmira as the Jackals were outshot 12-2 in the first period and after two, the Stingrays held a 20-10 advantage in SOG.  For the game South Carolina outshot Elmira 35-19.

Power Plays in the game were 14 to 6 in favor of the Stingrays.  Tonight is part 2 of the Halloween weekend featuring the sequel between the same two teams and a costume parade during the first intermission.  We wonder if we will see anyone dressed up as a blind referee in the crowd?   Read Jackals report here
